Hope Leroy Baumgartner was born on August 6, 1891 in Rochester, Indiana. He spent most of his life at Yale School of Music; he received the B.M. degree in 1916, and he was a member of the faculty from 1919 until his retirement in 1960. Baumgartner was an active organist and composer during those years, in addition to fulfilling his duties as a professor of composition and music theory.
